Care and support for people with dementia

Dementia is one of the fastest-growing public health challenges in Sweden. As the disease affects memory and other essential everyday functions, it presents major challenges not only for those living with the condition but also for their relatives. Over a four-year period, Forte is investing in research into care and support for people with dementia.

Dementia is a chronic illness that worsens over time. In the 2024/25 Government Research Bill (proposition 2024/25:60), Forte was tasked by the Swedish Government with investing a total of SEK 239 million over four years in research on care and support for people with dementia.

What kind of research is needed?

Today, care and support mainly focus on relieving symptoms and assisting with daily life. To improve the support provided, more knowledge is needed on how healthcare, nursing, and social support should be organised. Effective collaboration is also required between different professional groups – such as healthcare workers, social workers, and researchers.

Increased knowledge about early and preventive interventions is also essential, as more people are being diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment, which can be an early sign of dementia. Some groups of people with dementia have specific needs that must be addressed in future research.
