Ageing and brain health

The Government has tasked Forte with analysing research needs in the field of ageing and brain health. The aim is to further strengthen research by providing a better evidence base for strategic initiatives that can accelerate progress in prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care, as well as to promote knowledge dissemination and the use of research findings.

There is extensive research underway on neurocognitive disorders, such as dementia. However, there is a need for a comprehensive national overview of the current state of knowledge across ongoing projects, research environments and coordination efforts.

The assignment to conduct a needs analysis of the research field of ageing and brain health includes:

• identifying knowledge gaps within the field
• analysing the need for research environments and collaboration
• creating a national overview
• proposing a research initiative or other measures

Contributes to future investments

Forte will consult the Swedish Research Council and other relevant stakeholders. In 2027, Forte will report the needs analysis and present proposals for a coordinated research initiative or other measures to strengthen the field of ageing and brain health.

Background to the initiative

The national dementia strategy “Every Day Counts” (2025–2028) identifies dementia as a key area for development.

Forte has previously been tasked by the Government to implement a research initiative on dementia, based on the research and innovation bill Research and innovation for the future, curiosity and benefit (2024/25:60). Synergies between the two assignments should be taken into account.

The assignment is due to be reported in May 2027.
